Setting Excel AutoRecovery before exams

Follow Professor Nelson's directions CAREFULLY!

Before starting the exam it is imperative that Excel AutoRecovery is enabled.  If there is a problem with the exam this option MAY help recover the exam.

Click the Office Orb

Click Excel Options

Click Save

Place a check mark (if it is not already) in the option to "Save AutoRecover information every __ minutes"

Enter a "minutes" value you are comfortable with, 5 minutes to 10 minutes should be sufficient. Each time the spreadsheet saves Excel will stop responding; anything less than 5 minutes IS NOT recommended.

Click OK to close the options.

How to recover lost spreadsheets

If a spreadsheet does not save properly and appears to be lost DO NOT OPEN EXCEL until the AutoRecovery temporary file is copied to a new location.

Windows 7

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\~filename.xar

Windows XP

Right click on the file and select Copy.

Go to the desktop and right click and select Paste.

Right click on the new file and select Rename

Rename the file and be sure to change the file extension from XAR to XLS

Double click on the new file and follow the prompts. Check to see if any work was lost or needs to be completed.

2.2. Jumping Cursor

Jumping Cursor

Frequently laptop users or users with pointing devices integrated in keyboards have difficulty with the cursor jumping from one portion of the display to another. This occurance can be traced to two culprits. Most often it is fingers or palms brushing the trackpad/glidepad. Other times it is caused from a poorly fitting tip on the trackpoint. Sometimes the trackpoint can be moved as the keys around it are pressed.

Every user has a preference and all are adamant about their likes and dislikes for either the glidepad or trackpoint.  For that reason it is best to find the favored input method and disable the other option in the laptop's BIOS (refer to the manufacturer's instructions) or use one of the applications listed below to freeze input devices while typing.

2.3. How to Access the Administrator Account on Purchased Laptops

By default, all MCP users are administrators of their PCs. Some users have experienced issues that require administrative privileges on their PCs, via a second administrative account, due to profile corruption; Operating System (OS) damage; viruses; or other isolated events.

The University Of Connecticut, School of Business has a policy not to release the default administrator's password regardless of the situations for security, personal privacy, and many other reasons.

Instead, there is a FREE tool that will allow PC owners to change or delete these existing administrator passwords so full access to all accounts can be granted.*

  1. The download link and instructions on how to burn an ISO file to CD and boot from a CD are here.
  2. Full instructions explaining how to use *PCLoginNow to unlock accounts is provided here

*Please note that use of this application is at the end-user's discretion. The School of Business is not liable for direct, indirect, special, incidental, or consequential damages resulting from the use, misuse, or inability to use pcloginnow.

2.9. How to Recondition a Lenovo Battery

Nearly every laptop manufacturer has Power Management software to set power profiles for the device. Many include a battery reconditioning app that can check the "health" of the battery and help restore some of its original performance.

Search your laptops Control Panel or Start Menu for the Power Management software.

To recondition your battery on Lenovo laptops, click on the "Battery Maintenance" button on the Battery Information tab of the Power Manager. Before proceeding, make sure your laptop can be left unused and plugged into AC power for 4-5 hours.  Then click on the "Perform Reset" button. You will be notified when the recondition is complete. Please let me know if this helps.

If you do not have power management software installed check for the power management software driver on the manufactuere's website, download it and install it.

Lenovo owners can find drivers here

Run the Battery Diagnostic Tool (link provided below) to determine if your battery has failed due to this issue and qualifies for a free replacement. If the tool determines that your battery is eligible, it will direct you to the site where you can request a replacement. Lenovo is offering replacements only for batteries that have failed due to this problem.

Battery Diagnostic Tool

About the Battery Diagnostic Tool:

  • The battery must be installed in the computer.
  • The tool requires an active Internet connection for the following reasons:
    • To query our server for the current time and date
    • To check for tool updates
    • To open your default web browser to order a replacement battery if your battery qualifies
    • If you have any problems running the tool, please temporarily disable your firewall software and run the tool again.

Additional Information

  1. A message about Irreparable damage to the battery or Battery cannot be charged appeared on my computer screen. What does it mean?

The Irreparable damage to the battery or Battery cannot be charged messages mean that it is no longer possible to charge or discharge your battery. While this is a permanent failure of the battery, it is not a safety issue.

  2. What does low battery capacity mean?

Low battery capacity means that the battery run time is short and/or the battery fuel gauge drops suddenly.

  3. What is Lenovo doing about this problem?

If your battery has failed due to this problem, Lenovo will replace it for free. Use the Battery Diagnostic Tool to determine if you are eligible for a replacement.

  4. May I have a replacement battery, even though my battery has not failed?

No. Only a small percentage of batteries will actually fail, so we are offering free replacements only for the failed batteries.

  5. Does this problem pose a safety hazard?

  6. The Battery Diagnostic Tool said I did not qualify for a replacement battery. Why not?

In order to qualify for a replacement battery, you must meet the following criteria:

    - The battery must have already failed due to the Irreparable Damage or Battery cannot be charged errors or have low battery capacity as indicated by short battery run time or sudden drops in the battery fuel gauge.
    - The battery FRU part number must be on the list shown in the model/part list on the page.
